His parents came to the United States from Puerto Rico in the 1950s in hopes of a better life, but the relationship failed to withstand the test of life difficulties and they split apart. John, along with his younger sister Debbie, was raised by a single mother. He has been a music lover since childhood, frequently listening to his sister’s records. He got the nickname Jellybean from her, which was derived from the initials J and B and the phrase “Know What I Mean, Jellybean?”

John attended two high schools, De Witt Clinton and John F. Kennedy, but never graduated. At the age of 18, John relocated to Manhattan, where he discovered a new world of nightclub culture. He started his DJ career at clubs including Experimental Four, Hurrah, Paradise Garage and Electric Circus.

Jellybean recalls those days with nostalgia:

I remember that in the summer of 1977, I was 19 years old and worked 49 consecutive days in eight different clubs. Every night, I would DJ. I worked until four or five a.m., slept until about one p.m., went to buy records, went to record companies, picked up new releases and then went home, listened, ate dinner and did it all over again. At the age of 19, I wasn’t thinking about anything else.

However, in 1980, after listening to his mother and sister’s advice, John chose to continue his education and enrolled in Bronx College to study marketing.

Yet Benitez was not going to abandon the DJ console. In 1981, he was offered to become a resident DJ at Funhouse, where he also hosted a dance radio show. John’s style was distinct, he combined disco, funk and electronic music, creating an explosive effect on the dance floor.

A fateful meeting with Madonna

Collaboration with Madonna was a pivotal moment in Benitez’s professional career. He supported Madonna in the commencement of her debut project and helped create remixes for her first album in 1983, which included the songs “Everybody,” “Borderline,” and “Lucky Star.” John and Madonna dated for two years, supporting and motivating one another. Benitez also experimented with a new occupation as a music producer during this relationship. As a result of this experiment, the song “Holiday” became extremely successful and popular.

“Holiday” was not only Madonna’s breakthrough hit, which peaked at number one on the dance chart (along with “Lucky Star”), but it was also her first single to enter the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to Benitez’s remixes.

Collaboration with other musicians

The relationship with Madonna ended in 1985. Billy Joel once even contacted Benitez after hearing his remix of “Tell Her About It” and said, “I don’t really understand this, but it’s making me want to dance.”

However, not every artist was pleased with his work. For example, Sting initially criticized the 12-inch version of “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” but later admitted that John Benitez was extremely talented after this remix climbed to the top of the charts.

John does not mind artists who question what he does. One of John Benitez’s first individual projects, under the pseudonym Jellybean, which originated from a childhood nickname that his sister gave him, was a remix of the song “Walking on Sunshine” by Rockers Revenge. The track immediately topped the national dance charts in 1982. This was the start of a seven-year era in which Jellybean released at least one dance hit each year, which topped all music charts.

In 1987, Jellybean released his first full-length album, “Just Visiting This Planet”. “Who Found Who” and “The Real Thing” were two of its tracks that reached the top three at once. Benitez founded Jellybean Productions, Jellybean Soul and Jellybean Music Group.

In 1995, John also co-founded H.O.L.A. Recordings (Home of Latin Artists).
