His mother, Rose, was a homemaker, and his father, Lorenzo, was a bus driver. The boy’s childhood was spent in a dangerous, crime-ridden neighborhood, where he gained life experiences that would later serve him in his acting career. In 1969, his family moved out of the area due to an increase in violence and theft; his father said it was time for a change. However, Chazz continued to take the bus back to the Bronx to see his friends. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School, Palminteri began acting in 1973, enrolling in an acting studio.

In the early 1980s, Chazz performed in small off-Broadway productions while working as a bouncer and doorman, taking on various side jobs. In 1986, he moved to California, where his appearance and Italian heritage helped him land roles as “tough guys”—lawyers, gangsters, and cops in TV series like Matlock, Wiseguy, and Hill Street Blues. Palminteri’s big-screen debut was as a 1930s gangster in the 1991 comedy Oscar, starring Sylvester Stallone.

A Bronx Tale: A Reward for His Conviction

In the 1980s, while still a relatively unknown actor in Los Angeles, Palminteri decided to turn his childhood memories into a stage production. But instead of a regular play, he created a one-man show where he played all 18 characters himself, including the female roles. He imagined the play like a film, with scene changes happening with a simple clap of his hands—like a film editor. This one-man show became a sensation in Los Angeles, earning rave reviews from critics and long lines of eager audience members.

Soon, Hollywood started offering Palminteri significant sums for the film rights—first $250,000, then half a million, and eventually even a million dollars. But Palminteri consistently refused, because he wanted to write the screenplay and play the role of the mobster Sonny himself—it was his personal story. Producers were shocked by his refusal and thought the film would never be made. But Chazz was confident his dream would come true. They said:

“Well, you know this movie is never going to get made.” And I said, “But it will.” And they said, “What makes you so confident?” And I said, “Well, it’s just too good.”

Shortly after another performance, Palminteri was approached by Robert De Niro himself—the star came backstage and offered to make the film together. De Niro was so impressed with the play that he said Palminteri had to write the screenplay and play Sonny, while he would play the boy’s father and direct. They shook hands, and that’s how the film A Bronx Tale was born.

The film was released in 1993. It tells the story of a boy who, as a child, is taken under the wing of a mob boss. This eventually leads to a long-standing conflict between the boy’s father and the gangster, with both trying to influence the young man’s future. The story is based on real events from Chazz Palminteri’s life—at the age of eight, he witnessed a real murder, which became the inspiration for the future screenplay.

What Palminteri values most about this story is that De Niro not only promised but also delivered, allowing him to fully realize his dream.

“He let me be there and have my input. After that, his acting career took off. In 1994, his role as a gangster in Bullets Over Broadway earned him an Oscar nomination. In 1995, he played a romantic lead in The Perez Family and a detective in The Usual Suspects. A year later, Chazz was once again cast in a criminal role as a hitman in Faithful, for which he also wrote the screenplay.

Although Palminteri often played tough, rugged characters—gangsters, cops, and con artists—he always delivered a compelling and reliable performance. Attendees enjoyed the wine, Italian cheeses, and live Italian music. The actor had previously held a similar event in Danbury in December 2024.

Palminteri dedicated his wine to his grandfather, Calogero, who hailed from the Sicilian town of Menfi. His grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in 1910. This is because his Sicilian grandfather, who immigrated to the U.S., was against the next generations learning Italian, believing they should adapt to American culture and speak English. But the family often visits Italy, where they own a home. The locals have a warm relationship with Palminteri. His films have been very successful in Italy.

The couple’s children, Dante and Gabriella, have become actors and singers. They are currently in London, filming a musical.

Palminteri pays special attention to his physical fitness. Chazz works out six days a week, spending two hours at the gym every day. He also watches his diet and even fasts for 48 hours once a month.
