Bronx Little Italy \u2014 the storied blocks around Arthur Avenue in Belmont \u2014 is where New York&#8217;s Italian food culture still lives at full volume: hand-pulled mozzarella, fresh pasta cut to order, butchers who know your Sunday plans and dining rooms that haven&#8217;t changed a recipe in generations.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Story\"><\/span>The Story<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The neighborhood took shape at the turn of the twentieth century, when Southern Italian stoneworkers arrived to build the Botanical Garden, the zoo and Fordham University \u2014 and stayed. In 1940 Mayor La Guardia opened the Arthur Avenue Retail Market to bring the pushcart vendors indoors, and that market still anchors the district today, cigar rollers and fresh-pasta counters included.
