Zero Otto Nove: Salerno’s Area Code, Arthur Avenue’s Address

The name is a phone code — 089, the dialing prefix for Salerno — and the promise is a call home. Step inside this Arthur Avenue trattoria and you’re standing in a southern Italian courtyard: brick archways, a painted piazza mural, and a wood-burning oven turning out some of the most convincing pizza in the Bronx.

The Concept

Zero Otto Nove is the work of Roberto Paciullo, the Salerno-born restaurateur who made his name on this same street with his flagship Roberto’s before opening this ode to his hometown in 2008. The kitchen cooks the food of Campania’s coast — pizza with a puffy-but-crisp crust and soft center, baked pastas, seafood — and shops its own neighborhood for it, pulling meat, fish and cheese from the legendary purveyors of Arthur Avenue.

What to Order

Pizza is the headline: the Margherita is the benchmark, while La Riccardo — butternut squash puree, smoked mozzarella, spicy pancetta and basil — is the house invention people drive in for. Beyond the oven, the pasta al forno arrives bubbling with meatballs and cheese, and the insalata di mare stacks eight kinds of seafood into one plate. Finish with something from the dessert tray and an espresso, as Salerno would insist.

The Space

Exposed brick, arches and a sweeping mural of a village square give the dining room the feel of an evening on a Campanian piazza — warm, low-lit and a little theatrical. The wood oven crackles in view, perfuming the whole room. It’s old-world without being a costume.

Who It’s For

Pizza pilgrims, Botanical Garden visitors rewarding themselves after a walk, and anyone who wants Little Italy’s classic street with a southern accent.

Good to Know

Do I need to book? Reservations run through SevenRooms and are wise for dinner, especially weekends; lunch is looser.

Which day is it closed? Mondays — plan the pilgrimage for any other day of the week.

What makes the pizza different? A wood-burning brick oven and a Salerno-style dough: puffed, blistered edges with a soft, foldable middle.

Is it only pizza? Far from it — baked pastas, seafood salads and Campanian classics hold their own against the oven’s output.

Does it pair well with sightseeing? Perfectly: it’s a natural finale to a Botanical Garden or zoo day, and regulars treat that combo as tradition.
