Chazz Palminteri: The Director of the Iconic Film A Bronx Tale

A Bronx native, Chazz Palminteri became one of the most prominent actors to bring the charisma and expressiveness of Italian characters to the screen. Beyond that, he brought a special brand of masculinity, strength, and authenticity to cinema, reflecting the reality of his neighborhood’s streets, no matter how harsh. We’ll cover his iconic A Bronx Tale and his life journey right here on bronx-trend.com.

The Beginning of His Journey

Chazz Palminteri, whose birth name is Calogero Lorenzo Palminteri, was born in the Bronx in 1952. His mother, Rose, was a homemaker, and his father, Lorenzo, was a bus driver. The boy’s childhood was spent in a dangerous, crime-ridden neighborhood, where he gained life experiences that would later serve him in his acting career. In 1969, his family moved out of the area due to an increase in violence and theft; his father said it was time for a change. However, Chazz continued to take the bus back to the Bronx to see his friends. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School, Palminteri began acting in 1973, enrolling in an acting studio.

In the early 1980s, Chazz performed in small off-Broadway productions while working as a bouncer and doorman, taking on various side jobs. In 1986, he moved to California, where his appearance and Italian heritage helped him land roles as “tough guys”—lawyers, gangsters, and cops in TV series like Matlock, Wiseguy, and Hill Street Blues. Palminteri’s big-screen debut was as a 1930s gangster in the 1991 comedy Oscar, starring Sylvester Stallone.

A Bronx Tale: A Reward for His Conviction

In the 1980s, while still a relatively unknown actor in Los Angeles, Palminteri decided to turn his childhood memories into a stage production. But instead of a regular play, he created a one-man show where he played all 18 characters himself, including the female roles. He imagined the play like a film, with scene changes happening with a simple clap of his hands—like a film editor. This one-man show became a sensation in Los Angeles, earning rave reviews from critics and long lines of eager audience members.

Soon, Hollywood started offering Palminteri significant sums for the film rights—first $250,000, then half a million, and eventually even a million dollars. But Palminteri consistently refused, because he wanted to write the screenplay and play the role of the mobster Sonny himself—it was his personal story. Producers were shocked by his refusal and thought the film would never be made. But Chazz was confident his dream would come true. They said:

“Well, you know this movie is never going to get made.” And I said, “But it will.” And they said, “What makes you so confident?” And I said, “Well, it’s just too good.”

Shortly after another performance, Palminteri was approached by Robert De Niro himself—the star came backstage and offered to make the film together. De Niro was so impressed with the play that he said Palminteri had to write the screenplay and play Sonny, while he would play the boy’s father and direct. They shook hands, and that’s how the film A Bronx Tale was born.

The film was released in 1993. It tells the story of a boy who, as a child, is taken under the wing of a mob boss. This eventually leads to a long-standing conflict between the boy’s father and the gangster, with both trying to influence the young man’s future. The story is based on real events from Chazz Palminteri’s life—at the age of eight, he witnessed a real murder, which became the inspiration for the future screenplay.

What Palminteri values most about this story is that De Niro not only promised but also delivered, allowing him to fully realize his dream.

“He let me be there and have my input. It was probably the best artistic experience of my life. And I don’t want to brag, but I’ll say that I am the only person who ever wrote a one-man show, starred in it; wrote the movie and the screenplay, starred in it; wrote the book to a musical, starred in it, and now I’ve written the screenplay to a one-man film and starred in it. I wanted to complete the whole thing, like the end of a book.”

In the World of Film

At 41, Chazz Palminteri became an overnight star thanks to the film A Bronx Tale. After that, his acting career took off. In 1994, his role as a gangster in Bullets Over Broadway earned him an Oscar nomination. In 1995, he played a romantic lead in The Perez Family and a detective in The Usual Suspects. A year later, Chazz was once again cast in a criminal role as a hitman in Faithful, for which he also wrote the screenplay.

Although Palminteri often played tough, rugged characters—gangsters, cops, and con artists—he always delivered a compelling and reliable performance. His notable roles include:

  • A New York police officer in One Eyed King (2001);
  • A mentor and con artist in Poolhall Junkies (2002);
  • A mafia boss in In the Mix (2005);
  • A corrupt cop in Running Scared (2006);
  • A master swindler in Yonkers Joe (2008);
  • An eccentric psychiatrist in Once More with Feeling (2009);
  • An abusive father in The Mighty Macs (2012).

Chazz Palminteri has also made a mark on television. From 2005 to 2019, he appeared in crime series like Kojak, Rizzoli & Isles, Godfather of Harlem, and Modern Family.

Palminteri’s Culinary Passions

Chazz Palminteri loves good food and red wine. The actor has now opened his second restaurant, “Chazz Palminteri Restaurant and Pizza,” in White Plains, just north of New York City. His first restaurant, which opened in Manhattan, later moved to the Theater District and featured a menu inspired by Italian-American cuisine and Frank Sinatra.

The new establishment specializes in classic pasta, meat, and seafood dishes and also offers pizza baked in a wood-fired oven left by the previous owner. The location was no accident, as Chazz lives nearby in Bedford and is actively involved in promoting Italian gastronomy in Westchester.

Palminteri also promotes his own wine, “Chazz Cabernet Sauvignon,” produced by the California winery “Cry Baby Wine.” The wine is described as full-bodied, with aromas of blackberry and blackcurrant and notes of cedar and vanilla from aging in oak barrels.

On March 21, 2025, Palminteri held a tasting event at the Stew Leonard’s Wines & Spirits store in Norwalk, where he signed bottles of his wine. Attendees enjoyed the wine, Italian cheeses, and live Italian music. The actor had previously held a similar event in Danbury in December 2024.

Palminteri dedicated his wine to his grandfather, Calogero, who hailed from the Sicilian town of Menfi. His grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in 1910. The actor, named after his grandfather, said:

“This wine is dedicated to my grandfather and to all the hardworking men and women who came to this country with nothing but a dream. This is an immigrant’s wine. And let’s face it, folks, we’re all immigrants.”

Family, Fitness, and Life Philosophy

Chazz Palminteri met his wife, Gianna, in a rather unusual way. They first saw each other when Chazz was leaving church. There was an instant spark, even though they didn’t speak. A few days later, after a friend convinced Chazz to go to a nightclub, he accidentally ran into Gianna again as she was leaving the club. This was the beginning of their life together.

Palminteri believes the secret to their long marriage is never wanting to get a divorce at the same time. He thinks that true love isn’t just about accepting your partner’s flaws but also being willing to compromise.

As for the Italian language, Chazz admits that his wife and children are fluent, but he isn’t. This is because his Sicilian grandfather, who immigrated to the U.S., was against the next generations learning Italian, believing they should adapt to American culture and speak English. But the family often visits Italy, where they own a home. The locals have a warm relationship with Palminteri. His films have been very successful in Italy.

The couple’s children, Dante and Gabriella, have become actors and singers. They are currently in London, filming a musical.

Palminteri pays special attention to his physical fitness. Chazz works out six days a week, spending two hours at the gym every day. He also watches his diet and even fasts for 48 hours once a month. His wife, who is 20 years younger, helps keep the actor in shape.

Chazz’s life philosophy is based on always asking himself: “Does this decision bring me closer to my goals?” He believes it’s never too late to change your life and look for new opportunities, regardless of age:

“Every time you’re about to make a very important decision, you have to say to yourself, ‘Does this decision bring me closer to my God or move me farther away?’ You don’t have to be religious. You can just say, ‘Is this a good decision that will get me closer to my goal, or not?’ And then, if the answer is no, don’t do it! And also, I always believe that it’s never too late. You may not be able to change the beginning of your life, but you can certainly change the end, and you have to start doing it today.”
