CHILDHOOD YEARS AND ADULT AMBITIONS
The artist’s real name is Emanuel Hirsch Cohen. He was born on June 1, 1915, in the Bronx. He began his rich creative path in this borough of New York. The boy’s mother was an insurance agent, and his father created hats. There was another son in the family, Jerry Lippman.
Although Emanuel’s parents had nothing to do with the field of art, they supported their child in his acting interests and aspirations. The fact that he would choose this particular field became evident very early on. The boy grew up being an active, energetic and extremely artistic kid.
In his teenage years, Emanuel used to go to the village of Nichols. There, the boy befriended the theater troupe Pine Brook Country Club. The members of the troupe made a big impression on him and made him love acting even more. Soon, the boy began the in-depth study of this field. He was taught by the famous American actress Stella Adler. She was also a mentor of such outstanding artists as Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, Robert De Niro, Martin Sheen and many others. Training under such a master quickly paid off. In 1938, the talented resident of the Bronx made his acting debut. He appeared on Broadway in the production of “Coriolanus.” This was just the first step on the artist’s path to success.

In 1940, Cohen took a stage name and became John Randolph. It was under this name that he was recognized and loved by a vast audience.
In the following years, he played in many Broadway productions. Some of the most famous ones were “Peer Gynt,” “Guys and Dolls,” “The Sound of Music,” “Mother Courage and Her Children,” “The American Clock” and “Prelude to a Kiss.” He quickly fit in creative circles.
John Randolph also conquered American cinema. Fans could see him in movies such as Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, King Kong, Sibling Rivalry and You’ve Got Mail.

In 1945, Randolph got married. His bride, Sarah Cunningham, was also from the acting sphere. The couple lived together their whole lives, only Sarah’s death in 1986 could separate them. They had two wonderful children, a daughter, Martha, and a son, Harrison. They faced life’s challenges hand in hand and supported each other. In 1955, the actors were blacklisted in Hollywood for their political views. Despite the numerous problems, their family bonds only got stronger.
John Randolph passed away on February 24, 2004, from natural causes. But his memory lives on forever.
