On a street packed with Italian institutions, Enzo’s earns its lines the honest way — fried meatballs that locals cross boroughs for, pork chops buried under hot vinegar peppers, and a dining room where nobody will ever rush you out. This is Belmont’s Little Italy at its most unpretentious and most delicious.
The Story
Enzo trained at the Culinary Institute of America and cut his teeth in his father’s restaurant before opening a small cafe on Arthur Avenue in the nineties. In 2005, with his wife Maria, he turned it into a full restaurant bearing his name; by 2016 it had doubled in size. When Enzo passed away suddenly in 2018, Maria took the helm, and today she runs the place with her eldest daughter — keeping every recipe, and every tradition, exactly where he left them.
What to Order
Start with the famous fried meatballs — crisp outside, impossibly tender inside — or the stuffed calamari. The pork chop alla Enzo with hot cherry vinegar peppers is the dish regulars measure all others against, the eggplant parmigiana is a neighborhood classic, and pasta della nonna delivers the promised grandmother energy. Save room for pasticciotto, a custard-filled pastry that tastes like a postcard from Puglia. The house’s all-natural pasta sauces are jarred and sold to take home.
The Space
A warm, wood-toned dining room that grew from a thirty-seat cafe into a proper trattoria without losing its intimacy, plus outdoor tables for people-watching on the avenue. Service runs old-school: courses land when you’re ready, not when the kitchen is.
