A Salerno Area Code, Dialed Nightly in Belmont

The name is a phone number: 089 is what you dial to reach Salerno, and the trattoria simply says it out loud in Italian. This is not the red-sauce Bronx of postcards but the Campanian coast as it eats now, in a room where the wood fire is the loudest thing after the guests.

The Concept · The Story

Roberto Paciullo came over from Salerno in 1970, at seventeen, on what was meant to be a holiday. In 1989 he opened Roberto’s in the Bronx’s Little Italy, moved it three times without ever leaving the neighbourhood, and in 2008 opened this trattoria as a letter home. His line on the cooking is blunt: he serves what Italy eats today, not what the immigrants of a century ago carried over. Mozzarella arrives daily from Casa della Mozzarella, and the meat and fish come off the same old counters that made this quarter famous.

What to Order

Pizza is the headline and the dough is the argument: Sorrento-style, blistered at the rim, soft enough in the middle to fold. The Margherita is the control test; La Riccardo — butternut squash puree, smoked mozzarella, spicy pancetta, basil — is the house invention regulars order without opening the menu. Away from the oven, Pasta al Forno is baked rigatoni with meatballs and soppressata that lands still bubbling, Insalata di Mare stacks eight kinds of seafood on one cold plate, and Bistecca alla Salernitana with eggplant, cherry peppers and pecorino gives away where the chef is from. The wine list leans hard Italian.

The Space

From outside it reads small. Inside it opens into a covered courtyard under skylights: tiled floor, exposed brick, whitewashed archways, faded murals and painted windows on the brick, staged like a village square at dusk. The light is low, the tables are plain wood, and the open kitchen keeps the fire in view all night. It carries a quiet two-top midweek and a long, loud table on Saturday equally well, there is outdoor seating, and the room takes private parties.

Good to Know

Do I need a reservation? For weekend dinner, yes — tables go through SevenRooms and fill early; midweek is far more forgiving.

What should a first-timer order? A Margherita to judge the dough, then La Riccardo to see what the kitchen does with it.

Is it only pizza? No — baked pastas, seafood, veal and Galletto al Mattone from the brick oven hold their own, and plenty of regulars never order a pie.

Does it work for a group or a celebration? Yes: the courtyard room seats long tables comfortably and the restaurant hosts private parties.

When is the best time to come? Early midweek if you want to talk, a weekend night if you want the noise — and the Sunday after Labor Day, when the whole quarter turns into the Ferragosto street festival.
